This is a one-liter bottle of 1890 Cusenier Oxygenee Absinthe. This bottle was found along with dozens of other rare19th and very early 20th century spirits bottles that are completely full and sealed. This bottle belonged to the famous American newspaper and magazine editor Frank Munsey. It was part of the original Mohican Hotel cellar collection that was recently discovered in an adjacent home on Mr. Munsey's property in a cellar that was hidden behind a false door/wall.
Bonhams auction house has viewed this bottle along with all the other bottles discovered in this cache and has indicated that they are all genuine and from the time period.
This bottle of absinthe is exceedingly rare. To date, only one other Cusenier Oxygenee from this time period has been discovered in the past 15 years. During the late 19th and early 20th century, Cusenier Oxygenee absinthe sold for higher amounts than Pernod Fils absinthe and was considered the #1 marque brand.
This bottle is in very good condition. The label shows its age, however the bottle has a very high fill, with the liquid actually at the very high shoulder level. The cork and wax foil are intact and also in very good condition. We also have 1905 Bazinet absinthe as well as many other bottles of 19th century cognac, whisky, rum, gin and spirits for sale. Please feel free to e-mail us for a complete inventory and or to make an offer on this wonderful bottle of pre-ban absinthe.
Thank you.
