This is a bottle of 1840 Hivert-Pellevoisin Cognac. It once belonged to the famous American newspaper and magazine editor, Frank Munsey. It was part of a cache of rare 19th and very early 20th century spirits bottles that were found full and sealed from the defunct Mohican Hotel. This bottle, along with dozens of others, was found in an adjacent home on Mr. Munsey's estate. The cellar was discovered behind a false door/wall. Experts from Bonhams auction house have viewed this bottle as well as all the other bottles found in this cellar and have indicated that they are all genuine and from the time period.
This bottle of 1840 Hivert-Pellevoisin cognac is extremely rare. It was found inside a wooden box along with the original tissue paper wrapping around the bottle. It is very rare to find and have the original tissue paper for a bottle of vintage cognac. The paper and wooden box both state the following: HIVERT-PELLEVOISIN, 1840, COGNAC. The tissue paper has been preserved by us between to pieces of plastic wrap to prevent any further deterioration.
The label, cork, foil and fill level are in excellent condition due to being stored inside this wooden box. Interestingly, the wooden box that this cognac was found in was inside a larger crate and contained two other additional 19th century cognacs. The fill level is at the high shoulder.
