Product Details

Mencía is a Spanish grape variety primarily found in the northwestern part of the country. It is planted on over 9,100 hectares (22,000 acres), and it is primarily found in the Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras regions.

In recent years, very concentrated and complex wines have been produced by a new generation of winemakers, primarily from old vines growing on hillsides, often on schist soils, in combination with careful vineyard management. This has led to a renewed interest in Mencía and the Denominaciones de Origen using it, such as Valdeorras.

Since the 1990s, the grape is increasing in popularity, and an increasing number of noted Spanish winemakers are now working with it.

Joaquín Rebolledo Mencía

A unique wine produced with the rare Mencia grape, growing only in North West Spain. In this case, Joaquín Rebolledo Mencía comes from Valdeorras, which is one of the most inland wine regions of Galicia. The vines are tended in granite and slate soil. The high elevation of this precious small part of Galicia produces Mencía grapes that are different from other Galician wine regions, flavors tend to be more uplifted, more floral, brighter, and very pretty!
This wine, produced from estate own grapes, is all unoaked to emphasize the purity and delicate flavors and aromas of this grape.
Very clean and lively marked varietal aromas. Initially, many spicy notes are felt along with outstanding chocolate touches, mixed with mineral aromas (reminiscent of slate) on a good background of red and black fruits. When it opens up, the notes of fruit gain in intensity and expressiveness and some fresh balsamic touches are also noticed. Tasty, fresh, elegant and easy-drinking wine with a good attack and a silky mid palate, full of fruit and with some sweety nuances. Good acidity and a finish with nice fruity sensations.

ALMA DE TINTO MENCIA

87 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate June 2011):
“Pazo das Tapias’ red offering, the 2009 Alma de Tinto Mencia, offers up a fruity nose suggestive of Beaujolais-like carbonic maceration. Earthy minerals, cinnamon, clove, and black raspberry aromas lead to an easygoing, crowd-pleaser of a wine that is a very good value that will provide enjoyment for another 2-3 years. (Jun 2011)”
